ISO 41Cr4 alloy structural steel is an alloy structural steel (equivalent to 40Cr steel in the Chinese GB/T standard and 5140 steel in the US SAE standard).

Its core alloying element is chromium (Cr content 0.80%-1.10%).

It is primarily designed to achieve high strength and toughness through heat treatment (quenching and tempering).

It is used in the manufacture of load-bearing mechanical parts such as shafts, gears, and bolts.

It is not a specialized stainless steel designed for corrosion resistance.

Core Corrosion Resistance Mechanism: Chromium Passivation

The approximately 1% chromium content in ISO 41Cr4 alloy structural steel is key to its corrosion resistance.

In dry or mildly corrosive environments, chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to form an extremely thin (nanoscale), dense chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) passivation film on the steel surface.

This film blocks further contact between the substrate and the corrosive medium, thus providing a degree of protection against mild corrosion: - It exhibits good tolerance to dry air and slightly alkaline environments (such as water with a pH of 8-10), and can be stored indoors for long periods without noticeable rust.

- It exhibits some resistance to short-term, low-concentration neutral aqueous solutions (such as clean rainwater and tap water), and will not rapidly rust after short-term immersion (hours to days).
