The condition of supply (M) is not the same as the final use condition: The M condition merely represents the raw material's supply condition; its properties (especially toughness and machinability) have not yet reached the steel's potential.
BS 805M20 alloy steel almost always requires final heat treatment such as quenching and tempering or carburizing and quenching and tempering before it can be used in engineering components.
Direct use in the M condition is generally unsuitable.
