ASTM 4140 is a medium carbon alloy structural steel.

It contains alloying elements such as chromium (Cr) and molybdenum (Mo).

1 - High cycle fatigue performance

- Under high cycle fatigue (more cycles, generally more than 10⁴ times), ASTM 4140 alloy structural steel shows good performance.

Its fatigue limit is relatively high.

Fatigue limit refers to the maximum stress at which a material does not suffer fatigue damage under infinite cyclic loads.

For this kind of steel, under a certain stress level, after multiple cyclic loading, it can still maintain the integrity of the structure.

2 - Low cycle fatigue performance

- It also performs well under low cycle fatigue (fewer cycles, generally less than 10⁴ times).

This kind of steel can withstand large plastic deformation without breaking during large deformation cycles.

Its low cycle fatigue life is mainly controlled by strain, and its strain life curve (ε-N curve) has a certain regularity.
