Two-shot injection molding is a multi-material injection molding process.

The molded plastic part can be a combination of two different materials or a combination of different colors of the same material.

Two-shot molding can also be called 2k injection molding, double shot molding, multiple injection molding (sequential injection molding).

Two-Shot Injection Molding Process

The two‑shot molding process typically involves these key steps: First Shot Injection: The first material is injected into a specialized mold to form the base or core of the part.

Mold Rotation or Positioning: The mold rotates or repositions automatically within the machine to align for the second material injection.

Second Shot Injection: The second material is injected into the remaining cavity areas — often around, over, or beside the first shot part.

Both materials bond as they cool, forming a single, unified component.

This integrated process eliminates the need for multiple machines or manual handling between steps, boosting efficiency and ensuring strong bonding between the two materials.
