Jis Skd12 Steel Forging Process Technology - China

JIS SKD12 steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium air-quenched cold-working die steel of Japanese standard.

The core of forging is controlling the initial forging temperature to 1050-1100℃ and the final forging temperature to ≥900℃, combined with proper forging and slow cooling to avoid cracks and refine the microstructure, laying the foundation for subsequent heat treatment and die performance.

1 - Pre-forging Preparation

- Raw Materials: Select JIS SKD12 steel billets conforming to JIS G4404 standard.

Inspect surface defects (cracks, inclusions, etc.

) and clean surface oxides and oil stains.

- Equipment: Use induction furnace/resistance furnace (temperature control accuracy ±10℃), hydraulic press/air hammer, equipped with an infrared thermometer for real-time temperature monitoring.

- Forging Die: Preheat to 200-300℃ to reduce die wear and the risk of workpiece cracking.

2 - Heating Process

- Room temperature → 650-680℃: Slow heating (≤100℃/h), holding time calculated according to JIS SKD12 steel thickness (approximately 1-2 min/mm).

- 650-680℃ → 1050-1100℃: Heating rate can be increased, holding time ensures core heating (approximately 0.5-1 min/mm).

3 - Forging Operation

- Upsetting: Eliminates casting defects, compacts the center, and controls deformation to 30%-50%.

- Drawing: Gradually reaches the target size, with each deformation ≤20%, avoiding localized stress concentration.

- Forming: Final forging temperature must be ≥900℃, with the last 1-2 passes being light forging to reduce surface defects.

4 - Post-forging cooling

- After forging, JIS SKD12 steel should be immediately placed in a furnace/heating pit and cooled to below 500℃ at a rate of ≤4℃/h, and then air-cooled to room temperature to prevent abnormal microstructure and cracks.
