X12 steel corresponds to the Chinese national standard Cr12, the German standard 1.2080/X210Cr12, and the American standard D3; it is classified as a high-carbon, high-chromium ledeburitic cold-work tool steel.

Its typical chemical composition consists of 2.00–2.20% Carbon and 11.50–13.00% Chromium, and its hardness can reach 58–62 HRC after quenching.

Due to the extremely high hardness of X12 steel following heat treatment—coupled with the uneven distribution of carbides—traditional cutting processes are difficult to execute.

Consequently, Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) has become the critical process for its precision shaping and the machining of complex-geometry holes.

EDM is not constrained by material hardness and, being a non-contact machining method, effectively prevents deformation caused by mechanical stress.
