High Creep Strength En 42crmo4 Material Suitable For Temperature Environment - China

EN 42CrMo4 material (corresponding to W-Nr 1.7225, AISI 4140) is a medium carbon Cr-Mo alloy structural steel with high strength, high toughness and good hardenability at room temperature.

However, under high temperature (>400°C) and long-term load conditions, its creep resistance becomes a key indicator.

Through composition optimization, heat treatment improvement and microstructure control, its high temperature creep strength can be significantly improved, suitable for key applications such as turbine components, high temperature fasteners, petrochemical equipment, etc.

Key factors affecting creep performance

Alloy composition optimization

Cr (chromium): improves the oxidation resistance of EN 42CrMo4 material (forming Cr₂O₃ protective film) and enhances high temperature strength.

Mo (molybdenum): solid solution strengthening, inhibits dislocation movement, and improves the creep resistance of EN 42CrMo4 material (especially 500-600°C).

V (vanadium) & Nb (niobium) (optional addition): form carbonitrides (such as VC, NbC), pin grain boundaries, and delay high temperature softening.

Typical high temperature application cases

Turbocharger housing: long-term creep resistance at 500°C, cooling design is required.

High temperature bolts (ASTM A193 B7): 42CrMo4 is used for 400-450°C after quenching and tempering.

Petrochemical reactor bracket: withstand thermal cycle loads, low thermal expansion coefficient design is required.

Conclusion

EN 42CrMo4 material can provide good creep strength in the range of 400-550°C through composition optimization (Cr-Mo-V), quenching and tempering heat treatment and microstructure control, and is suitable for medium and high temperature scenarios such as automotive turbines and energy equipment.

For higher temperatures (>600°C), high alloy steel or nickel-based materials are required, combined with surface protection technology to extend life.
