Factors affecting fatigue resistance

1 - Heat treatment process

- Heat treatment has a great influence on the fatigue resistance of 4140 low alloy steel.

Quenching and tempering are the key heat treatment steps.

Quenching can make steel obtain high-strength structures such as martensite, but there are residual stresses inside the quenched steel, and the hardness is high and the toughness is poor.

2 - Surface treatment

- Surface treatment such as shot peening can significantly improve the fatigue resistance of 4140 low alloy steel.

Shot peening is to produce a compressive stress layer on the surface of steel.

When the material is subjected to cyclic loads, the compressive stress on the surface can offset part of the tensile stress, thereby reducing the possibility of fatigue crack initiation.

In short, 4140 low alloy steel has strong fatigue resistance, which is mainly due to the addition of alloy elements, good microstructure and suitable processing technology.
