Weight is a critical but often misunderstood factor when comparing lithium and lead acid forklift batteries.

Lithium batteries are dramatically lighter than their lead acid counterparts, but this advantage comes with an important caveat.

The Raw Weight Difference A lithium forklift battery typically weighs fifty to seventy percent less than a lead acid battery with equivalent usable capacity.

For example, a 48V 600Ah lead acid battery weighs approximately 1, 800 pounds.

A lithium battery delivering the same usable energy weighs roughly 600 to 800 pounds.

That is nearly 1, 000 pounds of weight reduction per battery.

For a warehouse operating twenty forklifts, this removes twenty thousand pounds of battery weight from daily material handling operations.

Why Lithium Is Lighter Lithium cells have much higher energy density than lead acid cells.

They store more energy per kilogram of battery weight.

Additionally, lithium batteries can be discharged to eighty percent of rated capacity compared to just fifty percent for lead acid.

This means a lithium battery with a smaller nominal capacity delivers the same usable energy as a much larger lead acid battery.

The lithium battery also requires no heavy lead plates, no liquid electrolyte, and no thick plastic casing to contain acid spills.

The Counterweight Challenge The weight advantage is not an unqualified benefit.

Forklifts are designed with the battery as a structural counterweight.

Removing hundreds of pounds from the battery compartment makes the forklift lighter in the rear, which affects stability, especially when lifting heavy loads at height.

A forklift with a lithium battery that is too light can tip forward during braking or when lifting near maximum capacity.
