Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator (OCXO) is a high-precision frequency source that houses a quartz crystal within a temperature-controlled chamber (oven).
By maintaining a constant, high-temperature environment (usually 75°C–80°C), it eliminates frequency drift caused by ambient temperature changes, offering superior frequency stability (often 1–10 ppb) compared to standard oscillators.
Key Features & Characteristics
High Stability: OCXOs provide superior short-term and long-term stability, often better than 10⁻⁸ per year, and can exceed 10⁻¹² short-term.
Temperature Control: A proportional heater and proportional controller (or AGC circuit) keep the crystal at its "turn point"—the temperature where the frequency-vs-temperature slope is nearly zero.
Crystal Cuts: Uses specialized quartz cuts, most commonly the stress-compensated (SC) cut for better dynamic stability or AT-cut.
Power & Warm-up: OCXOs require higher power (1–2 watts) and a warm-up period to reach stability, making them less suited for battery-powered applications.
