Favorite Consultants specializes in providing computer training for people with disabilities. I established Favorite Consultants in 1989 in response to filling a void. At the time the only companies who trained the disabled were adaptive device hardware vendors. The problem was that the trainers were hardware salesmen and although knew their products well, the services they provided were very limited. There was a need for somebody who could train most, if not all, adaptive devices and off-the-shelf software, as well as configure a workstation. Favorite Consultants was formed to fill this need. I started in this field in October, 1988, by developing the nation-wide adaptive device training program for Social Security Administration (the STAR project). I was responsible for designing the program, training vendor trainers as well as Social Security trainers, and managing four training sites (Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, and Seattle). We trained approximately 400 visually impaired and blind employees. After observing the success of the Social Security STAR project, the IRS called upon me, in 1990, to create a similar program to train their visually impaired and blind employees to use the IRS developed Expert System. In 1994 I was awarded a three-year contract and in 1997 I was awarded a five-year contract to train Social Security’s disabled employees to use current and new devices and applications. Both contracts required my company to be able to train employees with any disability to use both off-the-shelf and SSA unique applications and both DOS and Windows adaptive devices. The current contract differs in that NT 4.0 and NT adaptive devices are included. The majority of our current work with SSA parallels the Unisys IWS/LAN contract. We configure IWS/LAN workstations and train the same adaptive devices and applications as the Unisys Basic LAN User AD and Basic LAN User LVS/B. We are beginning to train Outlook/Exchange. I work with professional trainers on a contract basis. The total number of trainers reflects the current requirements.
